The enigmatic, polymathic, eccentric genius Samuel R. Delany is visiting Vassar today and tomorrow. He’ll be reading to us from his forthcoming novel, Through the Valley of the Nest of Spiders, and the good fortune’s been mine to spend a nice chunk of this Thursday in his charmed company.

A local take…
A metropolitan perspective …
A simulated autobiographical sketch …

The evening before Delany’s reading, his comrade in literary arms, Junot Diaz, visited Vassar and read from The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao; unfortunately, their schedules could not be made to overlap.

Here‘s Diaz on the gravity of Delany’s masterpiece, Dhalgren. J.D.’s assessment of Delany’s NYC-ness is great, but you’ll glean even more of the latter’s devotion and entanglement by sampling Delany’s vision of NYC in the year 3000 A.D.
