MLK 2010

null
(Martin Luther King, Jr., Coretta Scott King and Indian admirers. New Delhi, India, 1959.)

The celebration of Dr. King’s birthday as a federal holiday in these states united, albeit complex and rather ironic, is an honor, to be sure. Besides MLK, only George Washington and Jesus Christ have birthday-commemorating national holidays. But there seems to be an inverse relation between the political impacts of these celebrated individuals and their annual “celebrations.” Our collective memories of them are quaint, unenergetic, not at all in accord with the ruckus each, in his own way, underwrote.

Sidestep today’s glib dismissals of hip hop culture by health-and-wealth sermonizing King-chanelling pols, and sample some infrequently accessed quarters of MLK’s work:

MLK, Nietzsche and The Will to Power

MLK and technoscientific criticism
MLK and Star Trek
